Day 27: 27th May
Waking Hours
Today starts with ‘what you see is what you get’ moments, then moves on to the thoughts I have about my friendship with @colinmacleodofficial as I was listening to my personal favourite track from his last album. I’ve been bugging Colin for some lap steel guitar for weeks now but yesterday he messaged me to tell me I could use the track ‘Bloodlines’. He reminded me of the video I had shot for him which was never used or completed.
I remember walking about with a can of cider at sunset one night on my own camping in a remote spot listening to the tune over and over again - envisaging what I wanted to create the next day. One of the funniest things about working with Colin, and being friends with Colin, is there are no real rules. There is no convention - it’s go with what feels good. If it doesn’t work out then carry on to the next. I think Colin’s friendship and honesty have helped me disconnect myself from my work at times and not to get so emotionally attached and offended when things don’t go the right way. It’s been a rollercoaster- we’ve had our disagreements. I’ve been moody, he’s been moody but with good friends, you just carry on creating.
Thanks Colin.
Layered on top of this today is a part of a film Colin and I created five or so years ago to premiere at the London Surf Film Festival. @londonsurffilmfest It’s a slow pace. A mixture of music, surfing and dialogue. It never really saw the light of day so far as the Internet was concerned but showed at 8 international Surf Film Festivals. It’s definitely still one of the things I’m most proud of. None of this would have been possible without Colin & Will, Sparky, his parents, his wife, Jim Hope and many more. It features our friend Lumpy, sadly no longer with us, but always in our memories. Lumpy was such a character. I only knew him for a short time really but I loved hearing the stories of him and Jim and their adventures all over the place- Iceland, you name it. A total adventurer and pioneer. In a way, one of my favourite things was how frosty Lumpy would be when you first arrived and by the end of it, you couldn’t leave. We would be talking out on our boards about water housing, his hot rod Land R.
